Aboriginal Lorina from Undara Volcanic National Park - a Young Lady Who Would Make Any Australian Proud

Thursday, July 05, 2012

Aboriginal tour guide, Lorina, tiler, beauty therapist, pig hunter and fisher person of note, is certainly not your typical Australian. Yet this young articulate and humorous young lady led us on our most informative tour of the Undara volcanic tube caves in North Queensland, Australia.

She drives a Landcruiser ute, owns three hunting dogs and speaks with all the charm and intelligence of someone very gifted. A product of Tully in North Queensland, the wettest place in Australia, she would prefer the dryer savannah grasslands of northern Australia.

You may be fortunate enough to come across Lorina somewhere from Undara west and north through western Queensland, the Northern Territory to northern Western Australia, where she aims to pursue her guidance as a savannah grassland and volcanic tour guide.

Being someone who has heard so much derogatory speculation as to what the modern day Australian Aborigine is like, it is so very pleasing to have been informed and inspired so much today by Lorina. Her humour and intellect kept everybody inspired and educated as to what the countryside above and below the volcanic ground had to offer.

Australia has so much to offer the world! It has such strong foundations through the Australian aborigines and their love for, and stewardship of, the land.

Its people, both aborigine and others from 160+ countries, cherish egalitarism, a fair go for all. Its economy outperforms all from the western world. Its sportspeople, business entrepreneurs and academics, per head of population, more than set the standard for so much success worldwide. These attributes, plus many others, place this country at the forefront of what is good and to be admired in this world.

If more people could tell such stories as these about successful Australian aborigines then their plight could be one of celebration instead of, as is often the case, despair.
