Church Marketing Plans and Strategies for Marketing the Church by Bryan Foster

Friday, July 29, 2016
Sharing his church marketing plans and strategies for marketing within the Catholic Church for almost 20 years has been a passion for Bryan Foster .

His popular church and school marketing series include:

'Church Marketing Manual for the Digital Age (2nd ed)', 2011 as a paperback
'School Marketing Manual for the Digital Age (3rd ed)', 2011 as a paperback.

These books published as both paperbacks and e-books add a whole new dimension from his experiences with digital marketing. This is combined with the regular contemporary and traditional school marketing strategies.

These e-books are available from Amazon.com:

Church Marketing Manual for the Digital Age (2nd ed), 2011

School Marketing Manual for the Digital Age (3rd ed)', 2011

And also from all good internet bookstores.

His leadership roles within the Church include:

•   South Coast Deanery Pastoral Council, Chair
•   St Mary's Parish Pastoral Council, Coomera, Chair
•   Surfers Paradise Parish Pastoral Council, Surfers Paradise, Secretary
•   St Kevin’s School, Parents and Friends Association, Benowa, President.

All of these are on the Gold Coast, Australia. This is arguably the harshest region to 'market' churches in Australia. It is a very secular based city - being the tourist capital of Australia.

His school marketing experience began in the 1980s as a principal in two country primary schools and from 1994 to 2010 in a secondary school. Bryan now markets his publishing company and various marketing and photobooks.

Bryan Foster has held various senior and middle school management positions in Catholic schools: a primary school Principal in two schools, APRE in secondary school and Years 9, 11 and 12 Coordinator.

A highly ethical approach to marketing, and passion for marketing the Catholic school, was formed as a result of his extensive Church experiences, along with Religious Education teaching experience in Catholic primary and secondary schools in the city and country.

He was the Marketing Manager at Aquinas College, a secondary co-educational college on the Gold Coast, in what is arguably the most difficult school marketing region in Australia, since 1994 until last year. He was also the school’s Assistant Principal Religious Education for ten years. Bryan was seconded to Brisbane Catholic Education for the 2008 school year as the Catching Fire: Evangelization and Spiritual Formation Education Officer.

He holds a:
•   Master of Education from the Australian Catholic University in Sydney
•   Bachelor of Education}
•   Graduate Diploma in Religious Education}
•   Diploma of Teaching} from McAuley Teachers College in Brisbane
•   Diploma of Religious Education from the Institute of Faith Education, Brisbane.

He has taught for over 30 years in Catholic schools from Years 1 to 12.

Bryan has assisted many school marketing coordinators. He is considered highly by Brisbane Catholic Education and throughout the years has assisted their marketing personnel.

Bryan lives on the Gold Coast in Australia. His wife, eldest daughter and son all teach in Catholic primary schools, while his younger daughter attends a Catholic secondary school.

The e-Book - a Strategy for Church Marketing

Thursday, May 12, 2016

e-Books are a great addition for church marketing personnel - to offer the detail often lacking in everyday marketing campaigns. This option is also one of the most difficult forms of marketing your church or parish. Considerable content and time is needed for success. The author also needs time to write the text.

The publication stage may be simple and be just a pdf, which can either be uploaded free or sold though the parish website. Or it may be of a high quality through such companies as Amazon and its subsidiary CreateSpace or a variety of other outlets. A quick internet search would help. Church marketing through these outlets takes on a whole new dimension.

A high quality e-book would have between 300-400 A4 pages, whereas an average e-book would be a minimum of about 100 pages. Poor e-books would be below 100 pages - unfortunately, too many internet authors fit into this category these days, and hence make it difficult for the good authors to be seen as highly creditable in the marketplace. These books would be written with the purpose being to inform the reader in a detailed way of how to achieve whatever the aims were being offered for each church marketing e-book.

e-Books can be continually updated and uploaded to various websites for placing in the internet market. This is a huge advantage over everyday hard-copy textbooks, which usually take many months before publication! My e-books have been updated between 2 and 3 times each. These were then uploaded abd offered for sale - literally the day each was finally edited and approved!

Each parish should seriously consider whether they have the content regarding their parish, which they would like developed into an actual e-book for publication and sale on the parish website. Content would include all the parish has to offer at all levels, from new born to aged care and subsequent activities.

My suggestion for the most successful way to succeed with giving thorough detail in the marketing field is to write the e-book in a summarized point format. This allows for a large variety of topics to be covered. It also allows for the reader not to be overawed by copious amounts of words on each specific point being made. Summarized points are often more easily read and often easier to interpret and understand. The page layout is also far more conducive and attractive and therefore should appeal to more people and hence be more successful overall.

The marketing e-book is becoming very quickly a necessary marketing tool for the contemporary marketing personnel in today's digital world. The detail it gives can be very successful when combined with an appropriate writing format - particularly the summarized point format.

Love Articles: Basis of new book on True Love by Bryan Foster

Saturday, February 11, 2012
The 'True Love' theme forms the basis of a new book currently being written by Bryan Foster. These articles have a dominant place on the CPM: Church Parish Marketing website.

As this new, yet to be titled book develops, various articles which form the basis of chapters within the book will be published on this website. The articles highlight the key themes.

These articles will offer a depth of content, and subsequent personal challenge, which hopefully will inspire its readers.

The first THIRTEEN (13) articles published  to date are:
  1. Family Love - the Greatest and Strongest Human Love of All
  2. Love and Forgiveness - Essential for True Love
  3. Love Changes All
  4. God is Love. Love is the Meaning of Life. God is the Meaning of Life
  5. Love is Social Justice for All
  6. Love is the Meaning of LIfe - Human Frailties Get in the Way
  7. Love is Celebrating the Success of Others
  8. The Love of Priests and Pastors for Their Communities
  9. Love Through a Natural Oceanic Experience
  10. There is a God - Through a 25th Birthday Personal Experience
  11. There is a God - Through the Two Perspectives of Faith and the Historical / Cultural / Lived Experiences
  12. Love One Another as I Have Loved You
  13. Love is Giving - Australian Mateship Wins Out in Flood Covered Queensland

This is a new direction for Bryan Foster, yet one which is a very special transition - one into an area of special interest for Bryan. His previous e-books have concentrated on marketing the Church and schools associated within the Church.

Since a major spiritual experience on Bryan's 25th birthday, he has wanted to write of these and other loving experiences.

An extract from 'Family Love ..." highlights a central theme in the book:

"Family love is the most significant form of love! A loving family is the strongest unit within both civilised and tribal groups alike.

Family love needs to be nurtured, supported and encouraged. It needs to be held up for evaluation, judged and modelled.

When each individual truly loves the other, great things happen! Differences are accommodated, successes are celebrated, challenges are issued, respect is integral and most importantly forgiveness is offered and received whole heartedly, to name but a few actualities."

The necessity for forgiveness is discussed in the article 'Love and Forgiveness...'

"Love and Forgiveness are both essential for True Love!!! Most people find forgiveness the most difficult aspect of love. To forgive others and to be forgiven ourselves is quite a challenging experience! Yet, this is essential for the repairing of any loving relationship.

Once we have the ability to forgive others, or forgive ourselves, we are on the way to once again exist in that reality of love - the meaning of life."

While in 'Love Changes All' the emphasis is on:

"Once someone knows and appreciates what true love is, their whole approach to life, self and others changes. Love changes all!"

How to Market Churches at Christmas and New Years

Friday, November 25, 2011
The Church or Parish is now an integral part of the digital world community in which we live and pray. True, I might not be involved personally in this way as such, yet most of my Church attendees or parishioners are! Christmas and New Year's time is a most wonderful time to re-engage with the once-a-year attendees and to depth the engagement of the regular parishioners.

Marketing my church or parish is the most natural thing to do at Christmas and the New Year - through:
  • the way we welcome or invite people into our church
  • the way we make our services relevant to the modern world, but yet accepting of a variety of interests – this may be through arranging different services to suit the various demographics
  • the way we inform in a welcoming and not overbearing way of the upcoming events and plans for next year
  • the gentle invitation for each person to play a role, no matter how small, in the life of the Church in the upcoming year, etc.
All these are critical marketing styles, easily accessible to most key people within the Church / Parish, along with many of the other parishioners - the basic methods which need to be seriously considered.

There is a raft of other options available depending on the expertise of those responsible, as well as the budget offered.  Some of these options include:
  • Internet and paper newsletters and flyers
  • Church / Parish website – have a Christmas designed home page and be relevant with webpages and content offered – the website should also contain all information distributed to parishioners by paper throughout the year, even if only in an archive section, depending on relevance.
  • Internet blog posts for those interested in offering their thoughts on a range of issues either selected by the parish or left open to members of these websites – this is usually a most successful method for those internet savvy people – it is not really that hard to become proficient in this skill and then become a blogger or just read what others say.
  • Development of a data base for future contact though out the year – if people are happy to be informed, but not overrun with information, they will often engage more with the Church. You may even offer various levels of information giving to people the option to choose the level they wish to receive e.g. from detailed documents to simple e-flyers or reminder emails.
  • Calendar of next year’s events being published as a paper copy and on the internet.
The Church Marketing Manual... e-book by Bryan Foster is a wonderful christmas gift for any parish and contains hundreds of church marketing strategies and examples.
