This may seem quite difficult for most school staff, and it is, however, I very much believe every teacher and school leadership person has at least one good book within themselves. It may or may not be on the theme or genre that you initially expect, but it is there.

All school staff have particular skills, be these professional, trade-based, business, religious or spiritual, artistic, social or family-based, etc. These days people who 'have made it' want to tell us how they did it. May be this is your area. May be you are very creative, tell great stories, or consistently have people eager to listen to your every word - may be a fiction book or autobiography is your best approach.

Unfortunately, we are not going to see the fruits of all these skills as most people will not ever get to complete their masterpiece. Do not be one of these. Make the commitment, plan the process and Begin! Begin! Begin!

You will then need to commit to either a full time or part time writing schedule. Extended breaks dedicated to writing are the best options. However, a well scheduled weekly part time regime and out of work hours is another viable option.

Options to Sell Your Book / e-Book

The key approaches a new author could take are:

  • Chasing a Publishing Company to Publish Your Book - often quite time consuming and with a minimal chance of success.
  • Self Publishing - Printing, Marketing, Selling, etc - printing costs are high. The problem of getting your book marketed and into the stores - difficult.
  • Creating Your Own Professional Website and Online Store for e-book sales - relatively expensive to do well, however cheaper options are developing right now - but this method will get your work out there in a reasonably quick time. Then there is the challenge of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), i.e. the process of getting your website high on search engines - quite difficult but not impossible.
  • Selling e-Book Through Commercial Online Stores - probably the simplest and least expensive. This is the area which has taken giant leaps in the past  2 years.
  • Creating a Hardcopy in a Way Which is Inexpensive and Then Sold Online Through a Commercial e-Book Store - developing now before our eyes - and often offered through the top end online commercial bookstores themselves. This way allows for both the book and e-book versions to be sold, often by the same company - doubling your marketing options.

Check out the top end online bookstores for what they offer, such as Amazon.com. At Amazon com you can Amazon self publish your books inexpensively as well as sell your book as an e-book at their Amazon Digital Text Platform.



Check out various options to build your own website in relatively simple and inexpensive ways, such as at Yahoo Site Builder. Also see various search engines and others who offer this option, as one possible route for this to occur. This will allow for both the sale of your book as a book and an e-book online through both commercial online bookstores and though your own website and its online shop.

The more options you give yourself for sales, the more books and e-books you will sell.

E-book or Paperback? What is the best method to write and / or publish as a new or established author and / or small publishing company?

Whether to write an e-book or to write a paperback is now the perennial question facing authors and small publishing companies both new and old alike. It certainly appears that the e-book is winning, if you take the latest Amazon statistics as representing the norm. If you also consider the number of corner bookstores closing in our neighbourhoods, you would certainly lean towards the e-book.

However, I would like to suggest that we authors and small publishing companies prepare for both of these options. Small commissions in whole dollar terms for the e-books verse greater dollar incomes via the paperbacks and possibly even more profits per copy via the hardcovers, encourages us to prepare for both - e-books and hardcopies!

The Internet has the Answer

The internet is now the greatest asset we have to help make us a reasonable, good or even a very good income if our product is suitable to the market. Both e-books and hardcopies of these books can be sold across this medium. Initially you will probably need assistance from a company which can do both for you. There is an enormous cost and risk-factor trying to write, publish, market and distribute any book on your own. Major corner bookstores have their own suppliers and this is a difficult field to break into.

However, if you set up a very good website and create a very good SEO (search engine optimization) rating through the major search engines, then you should be able to sell your e-books and hardcopies through this medium. This is difficult to achieve and very time-consuming - but possible over time can be a reality.

The corner bookstore will also be of assistance to our goals, if we are able to convince them to stock and market our paperbacks and hardcovers. Not an easy task in such a competitive marketplace.

Amazon.com and CreateSpace an Answer

From my experience the best method is selling both e-books and paperbacks through some company like Amazon.com who have their own company which creates your publication in paperback and e-book formats. These obviously come at a cost, but in my opinion, at a reasonable cost for what you gain both as an author and / or publisher.

E-books will probably sell more copies with smaller dollar commissions per copy but with the strong possibility that the quantity of copies sold will be much higher than for paperbacks or hardcovers due to their lower cost per item. Hence, the overall income will be considerably greater.

I would suggest from personal experience to have both this e-book option melded with the paperback option. There are many people who prefer to have the real paper-book experience. Someone like Amazon.com and their company CreateSpace.com can open up this option for you. Selling both e-books and paperbacks from your own website will add another marketing and sales option.

Create Both Media for Success

Combining both the contemporary e-book version with the traditional paperback version of your books will open up many marketing and distribution options for greater sales and promotion of these books. Using a company, which does all the key aspects for your books i.e. creates both the hardcopy and e-book versions, markets and sells your books over the internet, always with your complete control, is something for which all authors and small publishers should aspire.

The author has found from his experience that both Amazon.com and his own website are two very good avenues to use to market and sell his e-books and paperbacks. How to publish a paperback and e-book cheaply

There is now a relatively inexpensive way to publish your books as paperbacks and e-books. Paperback publication is based on a system called ‘print on demand’. No more having to have a large number of paperbacks printed to save on individual book costs and then paying large amounts to self market your texts, or for even more outlay paying some professional marketing firm and then having to find a distributor, etc. I would like to share my recent very positive experience this year with an Amazon.com company called CreateSpace.

As a background, originally I took what I thought would be the cheapest method of publishing and marketing my books. The books I wrote I made into e-books and then uploaded these pdf versions to my websites for publication. Simple and relatively cheap i.e. if you do not count the cost of setting up two e-commerce enabled websites, each for a different theme, from a private designer. These days you can set up these e-commerce websites relatively inexpensively e.g. check out Yahoo’s Business options. Once you master the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) skills, which take some enormous amount of time and creativity and / or pay Google Ads, etc., then people will visit your site and purchase your books.

Since that time in 2009-10, I discovered that there was now a better way. This way uses the production, printing and marketing skills of an enormous world-wide internet selling company, Amazon.com, to achieve your publication at a relatively inexpensive cost to you. Once the production is finished you decide where you would like your books sold e.g. directly through Amazon.com and / or createspace.com and / or through their enormous collection of distributors and sellers world-wide. (You have more distribution options through the Amazon.com networks if you allow CreateSpace to arrange your ISBN numbers. However, if you take this option you need to stay with them and not go with other independent distributors.) The whole process is well explained on the CreateSpace website. There are many levels of production from which you may choose. They will do virtually everything for you, through to you doing almost everything yourself, with you eventually signing off on the finished product. Options range from cover design to proofing of text and internal designs, etc. Costs are proportionate to your needs. From my experience the whole process with your continued input / feedback sort or given is about 2-3 months.

Once the books are for sale through whatever outlets you choose, you then have the option of having your paperback converted into an e-book for sale on Amazon.com by CreateSpace. Once again you have various options of where to have these distributed dependent on where you had your ISBN sourced. Check their policy statements carefully before signing up.

Paperbacks and e-books now complement each other. It has been suggested that even though the markets are different, you will still sell substantially more paperbacks if distributed properly. The CreateSpace production and distribution methods seem to me to be the way to go for so many reasons, not the least this method is a cost effective world-wide means to sell your paperback and e-books.

I am still learning as my paperbacks have just been listed on Amazon.com and the e-books are being produced now.
